Relationships & Intimacy

When closeness feels complicated

You may want closeness deeply and still find that relationships bring out parts of you that are difficult to understand. You may find yourself drawn into the same kinds of dynamics again and again, wondering why you feel so secure in some relationships and so uncertain in others. You might long to feel close to someone while also fearing rejection, losing yourself in the relationship, or finding it difficult to let yourself be fully known. Sometimes you can understand a pattern intellectually and still find yourself caught in it when it matters most.

Intimacy can bring its own questions. You may struggle with sex or intimacy, sexual desire, vulnerability, communication, or expressing what you want. Perhaps it is difficult to stay present during sex, to talk openly about your needs or desires, or to feel comfortable being seen in such a vulnerable way. Experiences with intimacy can be shaped by many things, including what you learned about sex and relationships, how closeness was experienced in your family, previous relationships, shame, fear, or experiences that made vulnerability feel unsafe.

In therapy, we can explore what closeness has come to mean to you and what tends to happen when you begin to need, trust, depend on, desire, or feel vulnerable with another person. We may notice the expectations you carry into relationships, the ways you protect yourself when something feels uncertain, and the conflicts that can emerge between wanting connection and wanting to protect yourself from being hurt. Some of these patterns may also become visible in our relationship, giving us a chance to understand them together as they happen.

The goal is not to teach you the right way to have a relationship or to eliminate the vulnerability that comes with caring about someone. It is to help you understand yourself more fully in relationships so that there is greater freedom to choose how you want to love, communicate, set limits, express desire, and allow yourself to be known.
